For the delivery of the Spring/Summer 2014 collection, Marc O’Polo is integrating RFID technology to identify the goods along the company supply chain.

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. This is a wireless technology that makes it easier to identify, read and detect process data. Attached to a tag, the chip offers in contrast with a barcode the possibility to seamlessly identify, without visual contact, and in greater distances, many articles in a short period of time. RFID optimizes processes in logistics and stores, discovers missing articles earlier and closes stock gaps faster. This way, MARC O’POLO can offer customers the best possible range of products and an optimal customer service, all while sustainably developing and, when necessary, optimizing resource efficiency in delivery processes.

Since January 2014, Marc O’Polo has been delivering RFID-identified items to its own stores and those of our business partners.

RFID in detail


The RFID label is made up of a small chip, which stores the EPC (Electronic Product Code) or the SGTIN (Serialised Global Trade Item Number). This number is made up of an article number in the form of the EAN (European Article Number) or GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) and a serial number. Today, the GTIN is already printed as a barcode on the price label. The chip is linked to an antenna. Together these form the transponder. This sends the article number stored in the chip. Receiving antennas exist as permanently installed reading points on the customers’ premises, both at the cash desk or as mobile data collection devices.

Data protection

RFID technology at Marc O’Polo is in line with the requirements of the Federal Data Protection Act (FDPA). In relation to using RFID, no customer data is recorded, saved or used for any other purpose, which means Marc O’Polo remains compliant with all EU regulations. In addition, we have collaborated with our IT partner that is specialised in RFID data protection, and have carried out a PIA (Privacy Impact Assessment) and coordinated with State Data Protection Commissioners.

The RFID is clearly visible on the price label, or attached to the packaging, and is labelled with the RFID logo. It can easily be removed after purchase by the end user.


All components of the RFID system meet the recommended safety standards. The internationally established values for electromagnetic fields are upheld.

Waste disposal

RFID labels can be disposed of in household waste without any problems.
